About

Oh, hello there.

My name is Kayla.

I am a collector of tropical plants (mostly aroids) and the occasional writer of random articles no one asked for. I was born and raised in Washington state, and while I'm really jealous of people who live in climates where they're able to grow tropical plants outdoors, I wouldn't trade the PNW mountains & rain.

This website is an outlet for me to share all the things I love, from book & hiking recommendations to houseplant info.

Some (maybe fun?) facts about me:
  • I worked as a barista at Starbucks for 5 years. Now, I manage the D2C business channel for a small outdoor gear company based in Tacoma, WA.
  • I have an Australian shepherd named Sam (a.k.a. Sammy Boy, Samwise, Sambo, Sambuka, Samaruski, or, if he's not a good boy, Salmonella).
  • My first houseplant was a Syngonium White Butterfly purchased in early 2019. Like most people, my collecting ramped up in 2020. If I had to take a guess, I'd say I'm now a slave to more than 400 plants.
  • I like cold brew coffee, even in the winter. I'm one of those.
  • I have a B.A. in Anthropology and a M.S. in Digital Audience Strategy. I don't really use either degree and just have a lot of student loan debt.
  • In junior high, I used to read so much that they engraved my name in a plaque to commemorate my status as a complete nerd and librarian's pet. I haven't been back to check, but it's probably still there. At any speed, I love books. Let's be Goodreads friends!

Thanks for visiting my little corner of the Internet!

  1. I love your style! We are in the process of designing our kitchen remodel but are stuck on what color of flooring. We have hardwood in 3 bedrooms but need to compliment the hardwood with the our new kitchen flooring and hallway. Do you have any suggestions with a floor color that works well with light gray cabinets and hardwood floors?
