According To Pinterest, These Will Be The Top Fashion Trends In 2018

Alright guys. 2018 is officially upon us, which means a whole new year is in store for us and there's no telling what it might hold. Unless you have a digital crystal ball and access to a large global dataset like Pinterest does, that is. At the end of the year, Pinterest posts their annual Pinterest 100 list of the top trends to try in the new year based on user data that reflects what pinners are actively searching for and saving, and I have to say they are usually pretty darn spot on. There's a reason why many Google searches (especially those involving DIYs, food, and fashion) almost inevitably bring you to Pinterest pages. #Pinspiration at work.

This year's style section of the Pinterest 100 forecasts what are likely to be some of 2018's top fashion trends, and some of them I am incredibly enthusiastic about while others have me a little more skeptical. Let's dive right in and see what's Pinterest's crystal ball predicts for the new year below.

1. It's All About The Brand

The first forecast made by the Pinterest team is that logos aren't going anywhere. If you haven't picked up your favorite branded swag yet then you'll still get ample opportunities to in the new year. Think the ubiquitous Gucci logo tee, Tommy Hilfiger sweaters, and Adidas galore! Pinterest saves for "logos" reportedly increased by a whopping 203%. This trend also likely means that the athleisure look won't be leaving us either, as some of the most recognizable logos belong to companies that produce athletic and loungewear. And I'm alright with that.

2.  Statement Earrings

Earrings will supposedly be bigger and better than ever in 2018, with saves for "structured statement earrings" increasing by an insane 947%, the largest spike on the fashion list. Bold, dramatic, and fearless are the keywords being thrown around for the direction of fashion in the next year, and is a trend that will likely translate to interior design and beauty as well. High five girlfriends, because 2018 will be the year to really free yourself to be the confident, sexy, badass women you are. Buy the biggest earring you can find and rock them.

3. Let Go Of Skinny Jeans

I know, I know. This one is really hard for me. I started wearing skinny jeans in junior high and have never looked back. It's pretty much the only pant cut I wear with the exception of the occasional straight cut pant. But 2018 will be all about trying something new and breaking out of your comfort zone, and this is where the new girl on the block comes in. Skinny jeans, meet the wide leg pant. It's different, fun, and gives you the opportunity to mix different fabrics into your wardrobe. You may as well add a pair to your spring shopping list now.

4. Top It Off With A Beret

That's right. The quintessential signifier of Frenchness is coming back in style (did it ever really leave?). While I don't personally think I could rock a beret (I'm not really a hat person), the 269% increase in Pinterest saves for "berets" likely means that you will start to see the hat being sold at almost every retailer in the next few months. So if wearing a beret is a look that you've always wanted to try then now is your time to do so without having people think you're a complete Francophile.

5. Long Live Plastic

This trend is one that I have mixed feelings about. On the one hand, I am so freaking excited that many animal materials like real fur and crocodile skin are starting to fall from grace on the fashion scene. Big fashion brands like Michael Kors and Gucci have completely sworn off of fur in the last year, stating that the material just isn't "modern." On the other hand, manufacturing and disposing of plastic is pretty bad for the environment as a whole. Nonetheless, the next year will likely see more widespread experimentation and dispersal of plastics such as lucite and patent leather as designers and influencers seek to phase out more traditional materials.

6. Sheer Sock

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, then you all are familiar with the "socks and sandals" guy with his wool socks and Birkenstocks. It's a blatant fashion faux pas, but these guys may have damn well been on to something. Wearing sock with shoes one doesn't normally wear socks with (heels, sandals, loafers) is a trend that emerged in the last year and seems to be picking up steam. In particular, Pinterest saves for "sheer socks," the sock of choice for most fashionistas looking to make a footwear statement, are up 72%. What do you think, will sheer sock be a short-lived fad or will it stick around into the next year?

7. Embellish Your Strut

Speaking of footwear statements, 2017 was a big year for shoes. Not only did the cool girls start to step out in socks on under their heels (and actually make it look cool), fashion influencers also opted for more striking embellished shoe designs that drew attention. These included pearl embellishments, embroidery, decorative buckles, and various studs. In 2018, treat yourself to a pair of show-stopping embellished heels or flats, because life is too short for boring shoes.

  1. Can't wait to try these trends out! Although I'd definitely skip the plastic trend. It's just too hot where I live.

  2. I agree, plastic and socks probably won't be your friend if you live in warm weather. Personally I'd really love some pearl embellished shoes and to try on some wide leg pants. I need to mix things up and try wearing something OTHER than skinnies every once in a while! XD
